US.- The New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) has launched a campaign regarding unlawful online gambling, including prediction markets and offshore operators. The campaign is published on.ny.gov/RiskyBet.
The NYSGC stated that legal options include sports betting with licensed operators, advanced deposit wagering on horse racing by licensed providers, online raffles conducted by authorized charitable organizations, and interactive fantasy sports offered by licensed providers and the New York Lottery.
“Everything else—online casinos (including those claiming to be sweepstakes), prediction markets, offshore sites, and similar activities—are unlawful in New York State,” the commission said. “New Yorkers are strongly advised to avoid these bets. These operators, regardless of any claims they may make, are not required to implement certain patron protections, safeguards against underage play and gambling harms, approved house rules, or wager integrity controls.”
Commission chairman Brian O’Dwyer remarked: “Legitimate, lawful, regulated gaming—of which there are numerous available options—features fair wagers, player safeguards, responsible gaming measures, and societal benefits. In contrast, the unlawful gambling market deceives unsuspecting individuals—including youth—who believe they are placing legitimate wagers for the benefit of faceless, untraceable entities. Although the two may appear similar at times, it is evident which represents a smart wager and which constitutes a risky bet.”
