Maryland committee makes no vote on online casino regulation proposal
The Maryland Senate Budget and Taxation Committee recently held a hearing on a proposal to allow online casino and bingo gaming in the state. The hearing ended without a vote.
Senator Ron Watson‘s Senate Bill 885 would make regulation the responsibility of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission. Licences could be issued to video lottery operators or sports wagering licensees.

(AsiaGameHub) - SOFTSWISS has secured a Global Tech Award 2026 in the Cyber Security Technology sector. The award honors its Pipeguard platform, which serves to safeguard the company’s infrastructure throughout various regulated markets.
Press release.- SOFTSWISS has been honored with a Global Tech Award 2026 in the Cyber Security Technology category. The award acknowledges Pipeguard, a proprietary security solution integrated seamlessly into the software development lifecycle. The Global Tech Awards honor technological innovation across various global sectors, marking a major achievement for SOFTSWISS within the international tech community.
SOFTSWISS created Pipeguard to address a widespread industry challenge. As development cycles accelerate, conventional security tools often generate an excessive volume of low-priority alerts, causing engineers to waste time on false positives rather than addressing genuine threats. The platform automates this workflow, performing over 2,000 daily scans across more than 200 production repositories spanning various product lines. This efficiency allows for the remediation of over 90 percent of critical vulnerabilities within established deadlines.
Pipeguard is an internal tool engineered to secure software prior to deployment. By operating directly within the development pipeline, it detects and prevents the integration of insecure code, vulnerable components, exposed credentials, and configuration errors before they reach the production environment.
A key feature of Pipeguard is its Risk Context Score, a unique methodology that prioritizes findings based on their actual impact on the business. This mechanism has decreased irrelevant security notifications by 95 percent, enabling engineering teams to prioritize real risks. Integration for new projects typically requires only a few hours.
The platform supports a technological framework utilized by more than 1,400 igaming brands across diverse regulated jurisdictions. It also assists SOFTSWISS in maintaining compliance and passing regulatory audits in various markets, including Estonia, Brazil, South Africa, and Mexico, among others.
Evgeny Zaretskov, Group Chief Security Officer at SOFTSWISS, stated: “In the igaming sector, where rapid deployment and reliability are paramount, security measures must be embedded within the delivery process rather than treated as an afterthought. Pipeguard prevents exploitable vulnerabilities from entering the production environment across the entire SOFTSWISS ecosystem. This accolade validates our efforts in advancing global cybersecurity standards.”
SOFTSWISS will continue to present its latest innovations at BiS SiGMA South America 2026. Operators are invited to visit stands M80 and M85 to discover how the company’s technology facilitates the secure scaling of igaming operations in regulated markets.

(AsiaGameHub) - Tehassi Hill has been voted in as vice chairman, with Michell Hicks elected to the treasurer position, both for a two-year tenure.
US.- The Indian Gaming Association (IGA) has announced that new members have been elected to its board of directors at the 2026 Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Convention. Tehassi Hill will take on the vice chairman role, and Michell Hicks will serve as treasurer, for a two-year term.
Hill is currently serving his third term as chairman of the Oneida Nation. Hicks, a qualified certified public accountant, is a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
IGA chairman David Z. Bean, who took up the role in November following the passing of Ernie Stevens, Jr in September, said: “Today’s election demonstrates the strength of our tribal leadership and the unity of our membership. Vice Chairman Hill and Treasurer Hicks bring the expertise, integrity, and dedication required to help steer this organisation forward.
“As we confront major challenges, including unlawful prediction market operations and federal overreach, we are reinforcing our leadership team to defend tribal sovereignty and the future of Indian gaming. We move forward as a collective, holding the responsibility to safeguard what our ancestors built and to guarantee that tribal government gaming continues to support our people for generations to come.”
Hill added: “We must keep our focus fixed on the challenges ahead, while continuing to share the narrative of our success. It is vital that we stand side by side and build unity to act as a strong force for our tribal nations. I will work diligently to serve all of you and ensure we keep progressing in a sustainable and responsible way for our communities.”
Hicks commented: “I am grateful for the support I have received, and I promise to work hard. There are many challenges lying before us, including the expansion of unregulated markets that put our industry at risk. Addressing these issues will require careful strategy, sufficient resources, and a unified effort, and I am fully committed to carrying out this work alongside all of you.”

(AsiaGameHub) - LaLiga North America has established a multi-year partnership with the US prediction market platform Polymarket. This agreement marks a pioneering step for a leading European football league by appointing a prediction market operator as an official regional partner.
Announced last Thursday, this exclusive collaboration applies to the United States and Canada, providing Polymarket with the authority to operate LaLiga-related prediction market activities in these regions.
As part of the deal, Polymarket will receive visibility in broadcasts, opportunities in digital and social media programming, and the authorization to utilize LaLiga and club intellectual property connected to matches and tournaments.
The alliance also includes distinctive fan engagement activities, such as VIP match hospitality and virtual interactions with former players.
LaLiga North America's commercial growth initiative has been in progress since 2018 through a 20-year joint venture with Relevent, the entity managing the league's strategic expansion across the continent.
Current regional sponsors for the league feature prominent consumer names such as Walmart, McDonald’s, and Verizon. Polymarket's inclusion adds a betting-related and engagement-focused offering to this sponsor lineup.
According to Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan, the partnership is designed to enhance the viewing experience for LaLiga supporters.
“We aim to offer fans a more interactive method to follow the sport, allowing their views on players, games, and seasonal results to be represented instantly,” Coplan stated.
“Aligning with LaLiga delivers this interactive dimension to one of the world's most enthusiastic fan communities and presents a novel, more vibrant approach for North American viewers to connect with the league.”
Another sports deal for Polymarket
The LaLiga agreement represents the most recent in a series of sports partnerships for Polymarket as it expands quickly within the US market.
In October, the National Hockey League appointed Polymarket and its rival Kalshi as official prediction market partners, making it the first major US sport to form a commercial relationship with such platforms.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship formed a partnership with Polymarket the next month, and Major League Baseball also designated the prediction market as an official partner in March of this year.

(AsiaGameHub) - Premier League football clubs are set to face an £80 million revenue gap as gambling companies pull out of front-of-shirt sponsorship deals ahead of the 2026-27 season, The Guardian has reported.
The voluntary ban, due to take effect at the end of this Premier League season, was agreed upon in 2023 by clubs in consultation with the UK government. It aims to reduce gambling advertising within the sport.
According to the investigation, nine Premier League clubs have not yet finalized new front-of-shirt sponsorship deals for next season. Meanwhile, a total of 12 clubs remain without signed agreements as the new season draws near.
However, some already signed deals indicate that sponsorship values have dropped significantly. For example, Bournemouth and Brentford have shifted existing stadium or training partners to front-of-shirt sponsor roles, but at much lower fees.
Notably, Everton has chosen to keep Stake—its current front-of-shirt sponsor—as a sleeve sponsor, despite the operator being banned from the UK market last year.
Stake came under scrutiny last year when the platform lost access to the UK market following action by the Gambling Commission related to its white-label arrangements.
Several clubs are reportedly receiving offers that are roughly half the value of their previous gambling sponsorships.
“Nearly everyone is losing money,” a senior club executive told The Guardian about ongoing negotiations.
“Outside the big six, shirt sponsorship offers have fallen by around 50% from the previous range of £8m to £12m per season. There may be some exceptions, but it’s a very difficult market. And as some clubs switch sleeve or training kit partners to front-of-shirt roles, there’s a knock-on effect on those deals too.”
Blanket ban on unlicensed gambling sponsorships
A proposed total ban on unlicensed gambling sponsorships in football further threatens the sport’s finances, as the UK’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) launched a consultation in February.
UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “It’s not right that unlicensed gambling operators can sponsor some of our biggest football clubs, raising their profile and potentially drawing fans to sites that don’t meet our regulatory standards.”
The move aims to stamp out money laundering practices through offshore or unlicensed operations.
The timeline for this ban is unclear, but Melanie Ellis, partner at Northridge Law, recently told iGB that despite potential lengthy legislative changes, she expected “something [could be] tabled before the summer.”
“I anticipate the [two parties] will want to implement this [ban] within a reasonably short timeframe, but my view is at least 18 months will be needed to complete the consultation process and get the necessary legislation approved and enforced,” she added.

(AsiaGameHub) - The Ugandan government has put forward new plans to significantly increase the tax obligations for the gambling industry, affecting both companies and participants.
Legislators in Uganda recently proposed the Lotteries and Gaming (Amendment) Act 2026. This legislation, pending approval, would standardize the tax on betting to a 30% Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) rate, aligning it with the existing tax for iGaming.
A separate piece of legislation, the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill 2026, was also introduced. This bill would impose a 15% withholding tax on the net winnings of individuals from betting and gaming.
Provided both bills are passed, they are scheduled to take effect starting July 1 of this year.
Harmonisation of gambling tax in Uganda
The current gambling tax structure in Uganda, governed by the Lotteries and Gaming (Amendment) Act 2023, operates on a two-tier system.
That previous legislation raised the tax rate on gaming activities, such as casinos, from 20% to 30%, based on the assessment that they pose a greater risk to players.
Betting, however, remains taxed at 20%, a rate set because it is considered a lower-margin business for operators.
The implementation of a unified 30% tax rate would place Uganda's tax burden among the highest on the African continent.
Uganda is part of a broader trend in Africa where governments are adjusting gambling taxation, often shifting the cost to the players.
Last year, the neighboring Kenyan market enacted a 5% tax on betting wallet withdrawals, in addition to a 5% excise duty on deposits.
More recently, in February of this year, Lagos state in Nigeria introduced an immediate 5% withholding tax on all gambling winnings.
Performance of gambling in Uganda
Data from H2 Gambling Capital indicates that Uganda's gambling market has experienced consistent growth over recent years.
The total interactive market achieved a gross win of $438.3 million in 2025, with projections suggesting this figure will rise to $995.5 million by 2029.
Sports betting is the most prominent segment in Uganda, representing $328 million of the total interactive gross win in 2025.
Despite this growth, the market faces challenges from illegal gambling. The offshore interactive sector generated a gross win of $114.8 million in 2025, accounting for more than 26% of the entire interactive market.

(AsiaGameHub) - The Ministry of Finance in Lithuania has suggested implementing compulsory ‘player cards’ to track the gambling behavior of individuals in both online and land-based establishments.
Scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2029, this measure would mandate that all gamblers possess a physical card. This card is designed to enforce stricter regulation of gambling habits and allow state bodies to track deposits and winnings across various betting operators.
A proposed amendment to the country's gambling legislation detailed several key updates, including the card initiative. According to local media reports, these cards will associate gambling transactions with specific personal identities. The law also anticipates a steady elimination of cash transactions in betting establishments. These cash payments will be substituted by electronic payments tied to the player card.
The Gaming Control Authority is set to receive more distinct and robust powers to supervise adherence to regulations in both land-based and online gambling sectors.
A transition window of three years will be implemented to provide operators with adequate time to update or swap out their equipment to meet the new standards.
Nevertheless, specific adjustments regarding operations and market oversight are slated to commence sooner, starting on 1 May 2027.
Minister Vaitiekūnas highlighted the three-year phased strategy: “A three-year transition period is being set to give gambling operators time to upgrade existing equipment or replace it with systems that comply with non-cash payment requirements from 2029.”
‘Strengthens the prevention of problem gambling’
Kristupas Vaitiekūnas, the Minister of Finance, stated that the player card serves as a fundamental tool for responsible gambling initiatives.
“It strengthens the prevention of problem gambling and ensures that the main objective, reducing access to gambling and its potential harm to health, is actually achieved,” the minister remarked.
The new laws will mandate that operators incorporate identity verification, monitoring of transactions, and checks against exclusion lists into the player card infrastructure.
The suggestion for player cards is a component of a wider governmental plan aimed at reducing damages associated with gambling.
Starting on 1 July 2025, stricter rules on gambling advertising were enacted, which included increasing the legal gambling age from 18 to 21, taking effect on 1 November 2025.
Furthermore, gambling operators must implement technologies that can identify hazardous playing behaviors and step in to stop compulsive gambling.
The global move to sustainability
The reforms proposed by Lithuania are in line with an expanding European movement toward stricter player safeguards and regulatory enforcement.
Just last week, the government of Australia revealed a series of gambling reforms that included prohibiting gambling advertisements on TV and radio during live sports broadcasts and times when children are likely to be viewing.
Similarly, Ukraine has recently rolled out an automated mechanism to prevent military staff from using online gambling platforms.
